Volunteers Bring Joy in Times of Uncertainty 1

“Trust me in your times of trouble and I will rescue you and you will give me glory.”

Psalms 50:15

Volunteers at Denver Rescue Mission are priceless. We could not accomplish what we do without their help, especially in uncertain times such as these. Our long-time, loyal volunteers continue to selflessly serve during these uncertain times. The Mission also gained some new friendly faces, or you could say smiling eyes behind a mask along the way.

Despite the unique circumstances of operating as an essential service during the pandemic, we are in need of volunteers now more than ever. To our delight, many people have used their extra free time to lend a hand, including Shelby Burns.

Curiosity Turns to Action

Prior to the pandemic, Shelby passed our Lawrence Street Shelter everyday on her way to work and was always left curious about what goes on behind the walls of the Mission. It wasn’t until COVID-19 hit that she felt her curiosity turn to action— she reached out to volunteer at the Mission.

Shelby jumped right in to help at our Lawrence Street Community Center and then continued to serve at the National Western Complex as it transitioned into an auxiliary shelter space.

“The men have brought me joy in times of trial and uncertainty,” Shelby says.

As a true testament to God’s love and grace, Shelby gives all the credit to Jesus and her relationship with God.

“I started following Him about ten years ago, and without Him shaping my heart and showing me how to love people, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Knowing I am fully loved and cared for by Him makes me want to care for and love others,” Shelby shared.

Shelby is a true testament of God’s love and grace, and we are so thankful for the light she continues to share with us and all the guests. Her words of encouragement to the guests are:

First, you matter! You have tremendous value, you are worthy! I’ll never forget the feeling I got when I realized that I mattered to Jesus that He actually cares for me on a personal level. No one can rob me of that value. To the wonderful guests I get to see in the morning, I want you to know that you are not forgotten, not by God and not by your community. We care about you! Don’t let anyone tell you that you are not valuable, courageous, strong, or loved.

And second, you guys inspire me. Sheesh, so many of you have smiles on your faces at 7 am, before you even get your coffee. You were probably woken up by bright fluorescent lights, and likely didn’t sleep the greatest, but there you are, smiling and asking me how I’m doing. You guys demonstrate the most admirable resilience and endurance of character. Keep it up. I think most volunteers would agree that you guys help us more than we help you. I know seeing you all on those early mornings has changed me for the better, so thank you!”

Thank you Shelby for your service and choosing to share your love with our guests.
