Faces of Hunger

For people around the world, 2009 is proving a challenging year. Right here in Denver, many people need food assistance for the first time in their lives—veterans, women, men, children, homeless people, and working families. And they are coming to the Mission for help.

So far this year, the Mission has served about 75,000 more meals than last year during the same time period. Also, the Mission has distributed 735 more food boxes than last year—feeding an additional 2,940 hungry people.

The current surge in need is serious. While we find ourselves stretched and challenged, our 117-year-old commitment to feeding Denver’s hungry will remain the same. It is only with your continued support that we can meet the increased demand.

  1. “There are a lot of good people here, but they are just in a bad situation.” - Jim.

  2. Before he came to the Mission for meals, Richard worked in graphic design and printing.

  3. Destiny eats a nutritious meal with her brothers and sisters at the Lawrence Street Shelter. When asked what she likes about school she shouts, “Learning!”

  4. “I think it’s a good thing for them to be able to feed families who are hurting. Every little bit helps. When you have kids, with the price of food being so high and everything, you need somewhere to come in to eat.” - Carol

  5. “They do a really, really wonderful job with the food here.” – Gregory

  6. “I lost my job in November.” - George

  7. Muktar and his family, war refugees, receive three square meals a day at The Crossing.

From the CEO

Dear Friends,

You may have noticed that we changed the name of our monthly print newsletter. For years, our goal at the Denver Rescue Mission has been to “Change Lives in the Name of Christ.” We thought it was time our newsletter title reflected this goal, so we have renamed it Changing Lives.

I believe you will find the same great stories of hope you have always enjoyed, but with a fresh, appealing look. We hope you will like it! We love to share with you about the many lives being changed by the power and love of Jesus Christ, and let you know just how important you are in this process.

This edition of Changing Lives reports the increasing number of meals we are providing—currently about 75,000 more than at this time last year. We are predicting we will provide over 700,000 meals for the year, an increase of more than 100,000 from last year! A cup of cold water and a warm meal are often where change begins, so while we are excited to be able to reach more people, we are saddened that so many poor and needy require our services. Frankly, we need your help now more than ever. Our partners are critical to us as we try to do more with less during these tough economic times.

Thank you for your faithfulness and commitment to God’s work here at the Denver Rescue Mission.  You are appreciated! Let us know how you like the fresh look of our newsletter. Chris Gallamore has been our editor for several years, and she and her team do a wonderful job! They can be reached at info@denrescue.org

God bless,
Brad Meuli
