Nonprofit Business Administration
(Finance/Accounting/Human Resource Emphasis)

Overview:
The Nonprofit Business Administration internship is for college-age men
or women seeking a career in nonprofit enterprise. Participants will
develop their skills by assisting in the areas of finance, accounting,
and human resources.
Program Description:
Through assisting several staff members in various administrative departments
of the Denver Rescue Mission’s Ministry Outreach Center, the intern
will obtain practice in administration, finance, accounting, and human
resources in the 3-fold function (administration, fundraising development,
programs) of a nonprofit organization. Hours worked per week and the
duration of the assignment are negotiable, depending on total program
hours needed. (Please consult your sending agency’s internship
requirements.)
Activities/Assignments: Varies on main area of concentration,
but may include:
• Understand Restricted and Unrestricted contributions
• Assist with internal financial reporting
• Audit of financial statements annually
• Work on finance/accounting analysis projects
• Understand differences in for-profit and not-for-profit accounting (terminology,
financial statements, reporting)
• Develop understanding of state and federal employment guidelines, e.g...
FMLA, FLSA, COBRA, ADA
• Understand nonprofit sector policies and procedures
• Handle research project in particular subject areas to be incorporated
into the policy and procedure manual
• Become acquainted with Colorado hiring law and with recruitment and accurate
hiring procedures
• Assist with interviewee acknowledgment (sending out thank you letters
and postcards)
• Understand benefit regulations, administer and coordinate compliances
(including 401(k) and ERISA)
• Understand how to set up a complete tracking system (HRIS/ADP system)
• Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned

- Some meals available when on site
- Computer/internet access if applicable to specific placement
For Full-time Interns only:
- Room and board provided
- Computer and Internet access
- $150 monthly stipend
- $250 monthly tuition reimbursement
